World Rally – An arcade classic!

World Rally was written by a Spanish team for a Japanese company, and it’s a gripping example of a now mostly dead genre, the isometric racer. However, with games like Super Woden GP 2 still carrying the flag, I thought it was time to go back and have a look at this almost forgotten, yet gripping, style of racing game.

Great game that one and was very widely available on the Greek islands partially as I think it was heavily bootlegged! Usually it was in a cabinet with a joystick, but sometimes with a wheel and pedal (only one pedal as you didn’t get a brake). Apparently it made Gaelco a fortune, so much that they were happy to host the MAME rom on their website in the 2000s or so (I downloaded it there then) as a thanks to the players. One of the few games I got good enough at that I could do a single credit playthrough. Best advice I can give is that if your car spins out (especially on ice) to immediately let go of the throttle and keep it off until the car rights itself. Otherwise you’ll be on the roof!

Looks very similar to Great 1000 miles rally and I thought it was by the same people but after looking into it possibly not as that was published by Kaneko. Anyway, thanks again for showing a game I’d not heard of and I’ll definitely give this a go!

Love racers with this sort of perspective. Reminds me a bit of Ivan Ironman Stewart’s Super Off Road on the amiga, except more zoomed in.
