World Rally – An arcade classic!
World Rally was written by a Spanish team for a Japanese company, and it’s a gripping example of a now mostly dead genre, the isometric racer. However, with games like Super Woden GP 2 still carrying the flag, I thought it was time to go back and have a look at this almost forgotten, yet gripping, style of racing game.
Great game that one and was very widely available on the Greek islands partially as I think it was heavily bootlegged! Usually it was in a cabinet with a joystick, but sometimes with a wheel and pedal (only one pedal as you didn’t get a brake). Apparently it made Gaelco a fortune, so much that they were happy to host the MAME rom on their website in the 2000s or so (I downloaded it there then) as a thanks to the players. One of the few games I got good enough at that I could do a single credit playthrough. Best advice I can give is that if your car spins out (especially on ice) to immediately let go of the throttle and keep it off until the car rights itself. Otherwise you’ll be on the roof!
it’s really good fun, mate! I’m always interested in arcade titles from European teams as there are far less compared to the Japanese and American offerings. Good to hear it was nigh on ubituitous in Greece! We went to Corfu when I was really young it was a good time someone did a dance in the restaurant with a table in their mouth!
Looks very similar to Great 1000 miles rally and I thought it was by the same people but after looking into it possibly not as that was published by Kaneko. Anyway, thanks again for showing a game I’d not heard of and I’ll definitely give this a go!
no, different team, mate. there were a few of this kind of game all released around a similar time then they pretty much disappeared 😮 (until super woden gp and some other titles on the switch seem to have revived it a little). It’s a great game, mate, fully recommended! I also recommend neo drift-out.
Love racers with this sort of perspective. Reminds me a bit of Ivan Ironman Stewart’s Super Off Road on the amiga, except more zoomed in.
me too, mate! have you played neo drift-out? that’s another absolute belter in this style. Really worth a look.
I haven’t mate but just looked it up on youtube and it looks great. Similar style as you say. I’ll have to download the mame rom and have a play 👍🏻
really good game, that, too, mate! remember if you get the mame rom you might need the neogeo bios in the same roms folder if you don’t already have it 🙂
Yes mate, already have it for some other neo games. Can’t remember which now but I remember getting the bios a while ago 👍🏻
