Another great shooter and top video George! Played this to death on the wii back in the day but never played the arcade sequel – Ghost squad evolution. Next video to come perhaps George? 😊😉
i don’t think ghost squad evolution IS an actual sequel as such, it’s pretty much the same game although with the cardpass system so you can save games and thus “level up”. the wii version has the same gameplay caveats and follows the same pattern more or less. i think the original version offered less and arcade vendors could choose what weapons were unlockable. sega has a history of doing this with their games ! afterburner became afterburner II which is basically the same game with some additions. same as galaxy force became galaxy force II. they’ve actually done it with more stuff it’s as if they were doing updates before updates were a thing. the ACTUAL sequel to this game is “Operation G.H.O.S.T” which i should do a full review of some time, i’ve only done a short video on it here as i managed to alter the graphics so that there’s now blood in the game as it wasn’t in my version and it was weird. when you shot people it looked liked feathers were coming out of them. didn’t make any sense. so i edited it, made a video on HOW i’d edited it then didn’t actually make a proper gameplay video which i should. it’s a really great game and it’s a shame it was never ported to any home systems.
furthermore as far as i know evolution isn’t actually emulated well on anything. i believe the teknoparrot team recently got a piece of sega hardware that could lead to them de-encrypting the keycard/save system on a fair few games BUT it just depends if/when someone turns their hand to ghost squad. personally i’d love to see it working properly but in the meantime the wii version is still really good and you can actually run it at a higher resolution anyway through emulation, if you so desire (this video is in 1080p with anisotropic filtering and anti aliasing as opposed to the original being 640×480*)
*i know some people frown on upscaling old games but if it’s possible in a polygonal game i will usually try it. my eyesight is terrible these days so it helps for shooting stuff in the distance. on the other hand there’s something to be said for jaggy old school polygons but they do look immeasurably better on CRT or rear projection displays as opposed to modern monitors.
the difficulty levels do make a big difference though as seen in the wii version, with totally different enemy placements and/or different routes through the levels with different events taking place (most of which are unavailable in the base levels and the original game). playing through with the shotgun is quite funny as it’s pretty much impossible to check your fire with hostages around, everyone is getting blasted if you let off shots !

finally, yes, just checked to confirm re: evolution and found this
“Improvements over its predecessor include additional weapons, costumes and more difficulty levels.”
so it’s another of sega’s updates rather than a true sequel
