yes mate it’s ace. it’s such a shame the ps classic was such a pile of trash, this game emulates better on the snes mini than it does on that thing 🙁 a real missed opportunity for sony, i’m quite surprised they let themselves down so much with that one really !
Definitely saved the best till last in my view! Always loved the whole vibe of this game and the soundtrack is superb. Thought this was magical first time I played this and love the enthusiastic commentator aswell. Thank for uploading these RR videos George – they’ve been a treat 😊👌
yes mate i like the commentator in this one too i don’t know why they changed it to that annoying bastard in subsequent releases, that really irks me to be honest i wish they’d at least given you the option to choose between commentators. i can’t remember which one it is, but one of the games has heihachi from tekken as a voice but it’s hardly a replacement it’s quite silly too although slightly less annoying. thanks for watching mate, you are one of the few :p
Whey! There it is. Saving the best til last(?) . The game truly is a triumph and perfectly bookends Nacmo’s PS1 era. Like you said, the jump in visual fidelity from the original to this in just 4 years is incredible. The game also came with a second disk featuring Ridge Racer 1 (well, a 1v1 or time trial variant of the game) that ran at a 60fps and was included to demonstrate how far they’ve come. Speaking of, slight correction – the RR4 footage here isn’t 60fps. The game is hard locked at 30fps. If your emulator is saying 60fps, it’s because it’s reading the refresh rate and external framerate – the game itself is still rendering and being presented at 30fps. That said, it’s a very stable 30fps (both on emulator and real hardware). Even still, the game is fantastic, and has that turn of the millennium vibe that just oozed “cool”, especially when coupled with one of the best original soundtracks around. This whole era of drum n bass and that optimistic -yet fearful- view of the impending millennium was a magical time and one that’s impossible to recapture sincerely. If you know, you know. GTA3 has a similar tone too, although that game leans heavier into the more depressing post-modern side of the general mood at the time. I know I’m waffling and it’s really hard to articulate what I mean with this – but hopefully you know what I’m getting at LOL!
Anyway, all the best mate. Thanks for covering this series! Wishing you and yours well.
this is actually running at 60fps mate it’s a hack/processor trick on the emulator that enables it. if you look on youtube you can probably find other 60fps versions running too of playstation titles. some games accept it and others go wonky when you push the processor to 200% via emulation. i know it’s locked but it’s the same as demon’s souls being hard locked at 30fps on ps3, you can hack it on the emulator to get it running at 60. my emulator wasn’t saying 60 (i dont have an fps display), but i ran it originally without pushing the timings to 200% and, yes, it runs at 30fps and feels like it (having just been playing the ps2 and ps3 versions which run at 60 it felt clunky, so i looked for a way to “correct” it). it still plays great at 30, but it plays more smoothly obviously at 60. if you compare this footage to the original gameplay the difference is clear for sure.
i remember the ridge racer special disk, i had the original of type 4 on my ps1 the only thing that was a shame about it was as you say the fact that you could only race against 1 other car 🙁 still though it was a great showcase for what they could squeeze out of the system by that point. type 4 was also on the playstation classic but runs at about 18fps. i still don’t understand how they managed to fuck that thing up so badly. the game actually runs much better on the snes mini, bizarrely.
i didn’t actually like gta 3 much i found the aiming with those little boxes to be really weird but i suppose that was just the dawn of 3d shooters and companies were still getting the hang of doing 3rd person open world titles etc. i actually think crackdown and saints row 4 did it best, with crackdown being especially good for shooting cars as you could target the gastank or wheels very quickly. saints row had a much better system for shooting FROM cars, which is still something that’s an unmitigated disaster in the gta series. the on foot combat in gta is also shit, but the rest of the world and the activities mean that people tend to not focus on it so much. i hope they’ve sorted those problems out in gta 6 but we’ll see !
i have some loose ends to tie up with this series but will need to think of something else to cover next although i might just do some random titles for a bit as not everyone likes it when i get OCD about games i think the last time was the game & watch titles and i think everyone apart from me was fed up seeing those :p

Too right, it’s the best PS1 instalment of the franchise. Though for me, it’s the second-best game of the franchise overall, with Ridge Racer 7 claiming the top spot.
This is an absolute banger of a game I am getting the ps1 out later to have a go on this badboy!

Oops – just noticed your comment below George – what could be next in the series as I thought you’d covered them all? Intrigued 🤔😊

if i were to do a grand overview i think yes this and 7 are the best, with 7 edging it with the modern graphics and many courses, too.
