I wonder if the younger folk now playing Ridge Racer are trying to play it like a normal racing game, which if you do will send you bouncing into certain corners and the like; once you understand the drift mechanics it becomes a dream to play (something I found wasn’t the case with unbounded – it’s a good but harsh game, but it ain’t a Ridge Racer game). However I think they’re more thank likely stating ‘it’s shit’ to get views.
I love the original PS Ridge Racer, Revolution, the PSP version (which still looks utterly gorgeous for a handheld game) and the N64 version (I think it’s well worth a play as it has tracks from 1 & 2 (maybe 3, I don’t know), still retains the ‘feel’ of ridge racer and has a pretty cool soundtrack and it does look nicer than the PS version). The DS version however was an abomination (whoever thought touch-screen to steer was a good idea should be made to play it every day).
Anyway, I’d love to see a Ridge Racer anthology video though I may be in a minority, plus you’ve already covered a good few of them (and thank you for doing so!). I’ll shut up now.
no need to shut up mate, a ridge racer afficionado is always welcome here ! i just completed a review/first play of the n64 version, i spent most of the morning playing it and managed to complete most of it. it’s okay, but it has some serious problems that stop it from being great. anyway, you can find out my thoughts on it when you watch the video. at least someone is watching these thanks again for commenting mate ! feel free to share your thoughts, everyone else does 🙂

😀 It, along with Toh Shin Den, was good enough to sell me a PlayStation on day 1.
Compared to the pop-up fest that was Daytona USA on the Saturn, it was a clear winner, there was no way i was going to waste further money on a Jaguar CD.
I got far more enjoyment out of it (and i loathe Racing Games) than i did Ridge Racer Revolution, which I purchased on the back of it and rave UK reviews.
yes i don’t rate revolution as highly. i should maybe cover it at some point to explain as to why, but it doesn’t have the same magic to it. it’s quite poxy at points.
I have a hatred for Galaxians whilst Ridge Racer loads as that bloody thing resulted in Namco getting the loading screen patent which only recently expired (resulting in no other company being able to add games which could be played whilst the game loads), the c64 was doing that years before then with mix-e-load or invade-a-load.
That really, really boiled my piss at the time and how many grifters mention this? almost none that I have seen.
that is true mate i only actually found out about this recently, i didn’t realise it was a concept that could be “patented”. i remember a lot of c64 games having simplistic games to play while the actual game loaded, or they’d play music or suchlike, but i just presumed that other companies couldn’t be bothered to put in such things. in fairness, nowadays games load usually so quick that there’s little to no need for such things.
Well the Spectrum tape loader was in ROM and standard. The standard C64 loader was just a blank blue screen. People later created their own loaders. So the C64 had to load the turbo loader code first, then the screen so should have been slower however the C64 tape drive was digital (no volume control needed) and reliable.
The early ones for sure as they often used the standard load routines. My tapes for Twin Kingdom Valley and Manic Miner for the C64 look like you could record an album on them.
Trying to think of which was the first “turbo” loader I ever saw on the C64. Probably Novaload.
Love the original RR and RR revolution was even better. Once you adjust to the low frame rate (which is to expected given the hardware / release date), it remains a supremely playable game and still enjoyable today. Self proclaimed retro twats who say otherwise really are prawns lol. One thing I will say though – as good as the soundtrack is, it needed an option to turn that annoying commentator off 😂🙈
It always cracks me up how these dumb arse retro gaming youtubers will go back and play a game that was made years ago (1993 in this case), and slag off the graphics and the controls and the physics etc. Yes you morons, things have progressed and changed a lot in 30 years! Anyway, and as you so eloquently mention in your video George, the criticism is totally unjustified because Ridge Racer 1 is an amazing game which paved the way for a lot of other modern day racing games. I bought it when I first got my PS1, and played it to death! Even now on emulation I fire it up occasionally and it’s still brilliant fun to play.
It’s mind boggling how anyone can listen to these brain dead cu*nts!
indeed mate, the retardation is strong with the youtube “gamer” cartel. they’re thick as pigshit, know zero about gaming history that’s not on wikipedia, have no idea how and WHY games actually work and they certainly can’t fucking play them. the mind boggles. “ridge racer 1 is unplayable” tbh i never thought i’d hear that, let alone from multiple sources. absolute morons.

Always remember Action Biker on the C64 having two loading screens, which probably actually slowed down the loading of the game a bit.
yes, spectrum loading screens certainly did.

i do remember c64 games taking longer to load in general or maybe that’s just my memory.

I love the original for its influence, but it was made redundant immediately upon the release of Ridge Racer Revolution. Wonderful series though.
it IS still a great game, though, in its own right, and a very playable and addictive one. these people are prawns mate !
