Huge fan of the Ridge Racer games. I’ve been replaying them quite a bit recently. RR7 is probably my third favorite (next to RR4 and Rage Racer). It definitely doesn’t get enough love. Absolute classic belter of a game!
Really miss the RR series, and the PS3 one is a great game. My favourites are the PSP ones (they are like a greatest hits in terms of music and tracks), and I love RR Type 4 on the PS1 aswell. I agree the later grittier games suck, and the PS Vita one is just awful. The 3ds version is also pretty average. Wish theyโd do a new game in the spirit of the originals ๐
yes the 3ds version is just basically very “old” in terms of the series, it’s just in 3d. a bit “ho hum” really. yes the psp ones are great ! i’ve completed them both on the psp and played them a lot on ppsspp too.
Enjoyed playing this online back when the PS3 first launched. Such a shame that Namco tossed the IP into their dark and dank basement and forgot all about it.
Agree with you about Unbound being a poor Burnout clone. It’s a Ridge Racer game in name only. Would love to see a proper new Ridge Racer 8 or a remaster of Ridge Racer 7 for the PS5. Sadly, it’ll never happen.
it’s really weird that they’ve just kicked the series to the kerb. giving criterion the chance to make one was a big mistake as, yes, it’s just burnout but without the key things that make burnout fun (which, ironically, burnout paradise was also missing). there was a new game planned for switch and it was in development as far as i know, but it was scrapped ๐ such a great series but it’s one of those games where the gulf between the last real game and now is quite long, so the audience has “moved on” at least in terms of investors mindsets. strange one, as i’m sure the upcoming armored core 6 is going to be a huge success and, until now, that series was not even a blip on the radar compared to the popularity of past ridge racer titles. maybe when it’s successful (i’ve no doubt it will be) then older companies will think about reviving some franchises and doing them justice. ridge racer is an incredibly simple formula, too, and it’s not even a difficult game, they’re very easy but they’re just incredibly good fun. i think it would be a no brainer for namco to put out another one.
it is indeed mate, the last “proper” one was on the vita but i don’t class that as a proper ridge racer game as it was full of micro transactions to get more courses and not many people had access to a vita so it didn’t do well. since then there have been some lacklustre android/ios games using the license but we need a new game for pc and consoles ! i think unbound is the only one to ever reach the pc, officially, so there’s a huge potential market there for them i would say, especially if they add an online component (which is the best form of copy protection nowadays if people have to buy the game to play online on official servers)
