The skelingtons reminded me of a non-Nintendo Game and Watch type thing from the early 80s, which I thought was a Grandstand one but can’t find any details of it.
I thought it was called Haunted House, but not sure. Anyway it was a white unit, and the screen was split into three floors – ground floor was a swordfight against a skeleton, second floor I can’t remember but may have involved a Frankie, third floor was a boss battle with a Dracula (maybe involving a cross).
there are two versions of that mate a portrait and a landscape one but the game is effectively the same. i don’t think that’s emulated yet in mame. i’m also waiting for them to bring emulation for firefox-f7 which was a real favourite of mine growing up and i still have my machine !
Oh yes, I saw that other version on handheldempire.com where I found the portrait version (the one I remember). The kong bit seems like a shameless cash in – seems it’s a rebadged version of Monster Panic by Epoch.
I know what you mean – would love to see some of those old VFD games emulated.
Good work finding it. I had an LED/VFD two player game as a kid and it took me ages to find. It’s Astro Invader by Entex although probably was rebadged when I got it. Famously appeared in the Doom film where the guy was holding it wrong haha.

Great video and a fitting end to your G&W reviews George! I only had the parachute G&W back in the day and I had a mate with the two screen donkey kong one, so I’ve not seen many of these. Really enjoyed watching them! 😊👌
thanks a lot mate i am glad you enjoyed them and glad to have showcased some that people will not have seen before. i myself hadn’t seen loads of these so it was good to get the chance to play them all and put them through their paces ! i was a little disappointed with zelda, i think the problem with it is that it feels too adventurous and too like it’s trying to be a more involved game whereas the joy of most of the game and watches is the simplicity. trying to go too far does, in a way, expose the inherent flaws in lcd games. i thought it was okay though but i still think it would have been better as a castlevania game !

Anyone else remember this or did I dream it?
Found it – it was Crazy Kong by Grandstand – not quite as I remembered it.
